This gag was used when Curly was struck on the head by blunt, or sometimes sharp, objects. Examples include a felling saw in Oily To Bed, Oily To Rise, and a jailhouse sledgehammer in So Long Mr. Chumps.
The 2011 movie also did this with a chainsaw.
